  Las Vegas and the Mob

The 1995 blockbuster movie Casino was a fact-based dramatization of an era when organized crime controlled many of the Sin City casinos. Robert DeNiro played a character based on Chicago Outfit associate Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal, and Joe Pesci's role was patterned after real-life Outfit made man and enforcer, Tony Spilotro.

In early 2005 I decided to write the true story behind the movie. The Battle for Las Vegas - The Law vs the Mob was published in July 2006. During my research I learned a lot about organized crime in general and the Outfit's Las Vegas operations in particular. I also had the unique opportunity to learn directly from federal and Las Vegas lawmen how they  waged their fight against the criminals, going after both their casino interests and street crimes.

Although I didn't realize it at the time, the contacts I made and the book itself would open many doors for me and mark a turning point in my success as a writer.

I've written several books since Battle, but I'll always remember it as the springboard to a very rewarding second career.
